<image:title>About - my role as a helper</image:title>
<image:caption>From an early age I have been fascinated with life and death, the meaning we make from what happens in between, and how our experiences are expressed through the arts and dreaming. I have worked with young people in Montessori arts education, people with disabilities and life-threatening illnesses, grief and loss, in aged care community, and wellbeing support with people experiencing homelessness, deep disadvantage and social exclusion. After walking a very convoluted and often confusing path, I was a “late-bloomer” discovering a sense of meaning and purpose in my life as a psychotherapist in my mid-thirties. I continue to learn from, be excited and inspired by my clients and by my work, and I strive to help others in both the ways that I have been assisted on my journey, and also the ways that I have not. In my own narratives, I have found life to be both cruel and kind, there is no escaping that. Yet I have also found that what helps us weather the storms, is our connection to others and the meaning we create from it all.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, I am of Chinese heritage, and I am guided by both Eastern and Western ways of life. Language, the universality of the arts, expression and what connects us, has always been important to me. I spent my earlier adulthood travelling and living abroad in the UK and in Italy. I love animals, and have two cats, named Yuki and Kiro, and a dog named Niko. My “me time” includes relaxing with my furry pals, listening to audiobooks and true crime, getting crafty, and being in the sun and in the sea. <image:title>Arts Therapy Melbourne - We do not focus on producing a masterpiece</image:title>
<image:caption>In our sessions we focus on the often messy process, your unique experiences of what arises spontaneously in the moment, and how it connects to you and your life. You may not think you know what is troubling you internally, yet what is communicated through the creative process and its products will tell you otherwise. Art is a process.</image:caption>

<image:title>Arts Therapy Melbourne - YOU are an artist</image:title>
<image:caption>You may think you don’t have a creative bone in your body, but we are all innately creative beings. We know this when we witness a child at play, making cubby-houses out of cardboard boxes, or making delicious mud-pies. We were all once these children, and in many ways, somewhere deep inside these parts of us are still very much alive. Creativity in Arts Therapy may be expressed as a simple stick figure, a scribble or a shape, or it might be in the written word, music or movement. “The creation of something new is not accomplished by the intellect but by the play instinct acting from inner necessity. The creative mind plays with the objects it loves.” - Carl Gustav Jung Art is play. We all play, only, sometimes we need a little help remembering how.</image:caption>

<image:title>Arts Therapy Melbourne - art speaks in symbols</image:title>
<image:caption>My therapeutic practice emphasises the importance of the unconscious, and how we can strengthen our relationship to it. When we work psychodynamically with the arts, the unconscious projects, or externalises what is internal through imagery and symbols. This material from the inner realm can then be fleshed out and understood in a space which can be both fun and surprising, yet often profoundly insightful and meaningful. With this deeper understanding of your own symbolic inner world, and what it wants to communicate, you will be enabled to move about your outer world with a renewed sense of inner harmony. Art communicates.</image:caption>

<image:title>Arts Therapy Melbourne - Art, dreams & tarot in therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Art, dreams and Tarot cards, all share the same symbolic language of the unconscious. Many of my clients enjoy and benefit from the use of Tarot cards in Arts Therapy, where I guide them through experiential and creative processes to “read” and respond to the universally symbolic imagery through their own subjective lens, through their own religious or spiritual orientation. In addition, Arts Therapy is also highly effective for exploring your dreams and nightmares. In Dreamwork we can begin to make some sense of the often seemingly nonsensical; narratives that emerge. <image:title>Psychotherapy & Counselling Melbourne - THE ROOTs of our problems are often hidden beneath the surface</image:title>
<image:caption>As we grow through life and adapt to our environment, we develop unconscious coping strategies which provide us with ways to avoid pain and orient towards comfort and feelings of safety and security. You may have found now, that these modes of operation are outdated and are no longer serving you. For patterns to change on the outside, we must start on the inside. The unconscious is a storehouse for life's experiences, the creator of dreams, the home of intuition and a source for inspiration and creativity. While it may seem like mysterious or even frightening territory, when approached carefully with a qualified psychotherapist, this realm can offer a wealth of knowledge, gifts and resources for you to draw upon. In our work together, I will assist you in reconnecting to the often hidden, feared or rejected aspects of yourself and the stories that made you. We can then safely bring what is discovered to light, so that it can be expressed, processed and integrated with compassion and care.</image:caption>

<image:title>Psychotherapy & Counselling Melbourne - How we will work together</image:title>
<image:caption>With a sensitive, trauma-informed and holistic approach, I will meet you with an open mind and an open heart. Our work will empower you to gain inner strength, confidence, clarity and insight into your life and your experiences. Sessions will not follow a rigid structure. I am guided by you, and what arises within the space, from moment to moment. We will draw from a range of embodied and experiential modalities to help you to access, express and process your inner life. The space we will co-create is one of safety and trust, non-judgement and freedom of expression. Here, you will be supported through your inner work, with deep listening, honesty and gentleness, allowing you to recognise and move through and out of old ways of being for a new way of life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>To live aligned with your whole Self we must integrate unconscious and conscious. More often than not, these shadowy parts of our unconscious are the attitudes and energies that drive you in waking life. From a Jungian perspective the psyche, the mind, is a self-regulating system, seeking harmony and wholeness. Therefore the unconscious tends to illustrate the bigger picture of your life - what is missing from conscious awareness. Alongside the arts, dreams serve as both a window and a bridge to our true selves. Your unconscious inner world must be expressed, witnessed and integrated into consciousness to enable you to digest experiences, understand yourself deeply, to live, to learn, to heal and to point the way towards your highest potentials and life’s possibilities.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Your dreams are deeply personal. They communicate in an innate language unique to you - their creator, and just like dreams, meaning is also created, by you and you alone. I do not interpret or analyse your dreams, rather I guide you through processes of discovering meanings for yourself. Only you can determine what your dream means. Our sessions will involve, not only thorough discussions, but also creative, embodied and experiential approaches, such as art-making and guided imagery. If you are new to these practices, we will take things gently, at your own pace. For those curious about the use of Tarot cards as a tool for projection, representation, self-reflection and insight, we can also include this powerful art into the mix. Dreamwork can be interwoven into therapy, and it can also be explored separately as a practice of its own in Seeker Sessions for self-development. Follow the links below to discover more. <image:title>Tarot in Therapy Melbourne</image:title>
<image:caption>These days Tarot reading is no longer restricted to your practitioner at the local crystal shop or arts and crafts market. Owning a Tarot deck has become quite common, with people practising in their own homes for comfort, self-reflection, guidance and creative thinking. It is understandable that Tarot is now being recognised as an helpful practice for self-care and mental health, and not just a plaything. What is more exciting, however, is that the cards are becoming more accepted as an effective tool to inspire introspection, insight and meaning-making in psychotherapy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tarot in Therapy Melbourne - What is the tarot?</image:title>
<image:caption>The Tarot is an organised pictorial system of 78 cards dating back to 15th century Europe. Originally used in parlour games, the cards eventually rose to popularity as a “fortune telling” device, with a resurgence during the New Age movement from the 1970s to the 1990s. Unfortunately, Tarot still carries some of the sticky stigma associated to scam artists and psychics who claim that the cards can predict the future. I am of the belief that what is divined within the cards, comes from the reader and not the cards themselves. After all, they are but pieces of beautifully printed card full of rich symbolism. They are less connected to the future and more so connected to the present reality of the viewer.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tarot in Therapy Melbourne - how the cards are used in therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>If you’re familiar with the theory behind the Rorschach inkblot test, you will know that a person projects aspects of themselves onto external objects, and often unconsciously. When we use Tarot in therapy, we use the symbolic imagery within the cards to project parts of our unconscious upon. Each of the 78 cards portray illustrations that are relatable to the human experience, making them an ideal tool for representing themes, issues and feelings we might be faced with. Some of the symbols may be universal or as Carl Jung called them, archetypal - part of the greater or collective unconscious, whereas others are completely open to our own subjective interpretation, symbols of our personal unconscious.</image:caption>

<image:title>Tarot in Therapy Melbourne</image:title>
<image:caption>Working with Tarot cards in our sessions, we focus on what responses the images stimulate in you. We pay less attention to the traditional meanings of the cards, and work with the raw imagery, paying closer attention to the spontaneous thoughts, feelings, memories and sensations that arise. Our intention is to gather and amplify your own personal associations and ideas, so that you can interpret the cards in a way that make sense in your life and what you are going through.</image:caption>
